Frequently Asked Questions

This kind of experience can be both exciting and intimidating. Here are some frequently asked questions to give you a picture of exactly how the program works. We’re happy to answer any additional questions you might have as well.

Is it safe?

Yes. Doulos is located in the small mountain town of Jarabacoa.  It is like anywhere else in the world where you can find trouble if you want to, but it IS safe and has that small-town feel.  Students who come from the States stay with a family who is well-known to us and has been thoroughly vetted by our Study Abroad Coordinator.  To date, there have never been any safety issues with any student who participated in our program.

Do I have to know Spanish?

Not at all!  Our classes are all in English (except a few which you will be exempted from).  Host families have someone with a basic knowledge of English, but we encourage you to learn as much Spanish as possible!

Will the classes I take at Doulos transfer to my current school?

YES! Doulos is ACSI and AdvancED accredited so we have never had a problem with all classes being transferred.

What is the cost and what does it include?

The cost is $4500 (discounts are given to students from partner schools) and includes a homestay with a family connected to Doulos, breakfast and lunch at the school cafe, three cultural trips around the country, any outdoor education trips, transportation to and from the airport, and Spanish classes.

What about issues surrounding Covid?

The Dominican Republic has managed the Covid situation remarkably well!  About 80% of the population is fully vaccinated.  All Covid restrictions have been lifted and, life is back to normal.  As per US regulations, a Covid test is required to enter the States, so when you are ready to leave, we will take you to get one.

When can I come?

As soon as next semester! We are accepting applications for both the fall and spring semesters of the 2022-2023 school year.  Fall semester is August 15 - December 14, and the spring semester is January 9 - June 8.  (*dates may vary slightly)
