Sowing in Borrowed Soil:
How Doulos Students and Staff Prepare for What’s Next
End-of-year transitions at Doulos Discovery School reflect our mission to equip and launch servant leaders.
(4 Minute Read)
At Doulos Discovery School in the Dominican Republic, the end of each school year brings a unique rhythm—a slow, steady shift from daily routine into meaningful transitions. Each May, the signs begin to appear: senior presentations, final expeditions, goodbye parties, and lists of furniture and fans being sold as staff prepare to move on.
It happens every year—and yet it never feels routine.
From final exams to heartfelt goodbyes, Doulos seniors begin their launch into what comes next. Missionary teachers announce their plans, farewell events are added to calendars, and the campus air grows thick with emotion—gratitude, anticipation, and the sadness that naturally comes with closing a chapter you’ve loved.
And yet, this is exactly why Doulos exists: to equip and launch servant leaders, not to hold them back. Whether it’s a student preparing for national exams or a staff member returning to a new calling, we count it a privilege to be part of their journey.
These transitions mark not just an end—but also the fruit of what has been planted.
We see it in senior capstone projects, where students reflect on how Doulos shaped their character and faith.
We see it in staff who have faithfully poured into students and now prepare to say “until next time.”
We see it in the celebration of parents, peers, and mentors as they reflect on all God has done.
In the busyness of wrapping up the academic year, it’s easy to get lost in logistics. But if you pause, you’ll see what we see: the evidence of God’s faithfulness. The seeds that were planted in hearts years ago, now watered with prayers and tears, are beginning to bear fruit.
That’s what we’re about at Doulos.
We are sowing in borrowed soil—trusting that God will continue to weave His purposes together in every student and staff member, long after they leave our campus.
A Poem from the Doulos Story
In Borrowed Soil
We planted seeds with trembling hands,
Not knowing what the years would yield—
Just prayers and sweat in borrowed soil,
And hope that time would someday heal.
The rains came hard, the sunlight hid,
And tears fell quiet in the night.
But even there, beneath the dark,
The roots grew strong without the light.
Now here they stand—these lives, this fruit,
Not born of ease, but forged through grace.
The harvest sings of all God’s faith,
In every tear, a sacred trace.
May’s Highlights
MESLO Presentations – Empowering Student Identity & Reflection
Our 8th grade students delivered personal 10-minute “MESLO” presentations, designed to help them reflect on who they are and who they’re becoming. This milestone project fosters confidence, critical thinking, and public speaking—key skills for servant leadership.
Expedition Night – Real-World Learning on Display
At our Spring 2025 Expedition Night, students showcased the real-world impact of their semester’s learning. Families, friends, and community members came to hear presentations and view projects, celebrating the power of project-based Christian education.
Spirit Week – Celebrating Community with Joy
In true Doulos fashion, Spirit Week brought joy and creativity to campus with themed outfits and friendly competitions. It was a timely celebration that helped us finish the school year strong, connected, and full of laughter.
Pond Restoration – Peaceful Spaces for Learning & Reflection
Thanks to new filters our pond has become a place of beauty and calm once again. Students enjoy watching the fish and turtles during breaks—a peaceful reminder of God's creation.
